How to Use Gradients in Canva: Everything You Need to Know

What are gradients?
Gradients are one of the most commonly used design features because they can be used to create subtle or eye-catching effects, depending on what you’re going for. There are three types of gradients: linear, radial, and abstract.
Linear gradients go from one color to another in a straight line, radial gradients go from the center of the graphic to the edge and create a circular effect, and abstract gradients can be any shape and use any colors. You can also add a 3D effect by using a gradient to go from a light color to a dark color.
Linear Gradients
In digital design, a gradient is a gradual transition between two or more colors. The most common type of gradient is the linear gradient, which transitions evenly between colors along a straight line. Linear gradients can have any number of color stops, or points along the gradient where the color changes.
When designing for the web, it’s important to choose a HTML color code that will translate well to other screens and devices. Oftentimes, pure black (#000000) or white (#ffffff) are used as the end points of a linear gradient, with one or more shades of grey in between. However, you can chose any colors you like for your gradient! Experiment with different color combinations to see what looks best on your page.
Two colors
If you’re looking to create a gradient with two colors, you’ll want to choose colors that have a high contrast with each other. Light and dark colors tend to work well together, or you could try a slight fade. When creating a linear gradient, it typically looks best when the colors are arranged horizontally from left to right. However, you could also try a gradient from top to bottom. Experiment with different color combinations to see what looks best for your project.
Three colors
Linear gradients are a great way to add some color to your designs. With three colors, you can really start to make things that pop. You can use them to add some dimension to your designs, or as an overlay on top of images. In Canva, I haven’t found anything more than three colors, but more than three can be designed in any design program. With linear gradients, the possibilities are endless! Radial Gradients

Unlike a linear gradient, which has two defined endpoints, a radial gradient has no defined endpoint; instead, it continues to radiate outward until it reaches the edge of its container.

When used correctly, radial gradients can add depth and dimension to an otherwise flat design. However, care should be taken to avoid creating too much contrast between the different colors in the gradient, as this can make the overall design appear cluttered and busy.
Abstract Gradients
Abstract gradients are a popular choice for web and graphic design, as they can add an element of interest and personality to a project. They are often created by artists, who may use a variety of techniques to create the desired effect. Overlay Gradients

White and black gradients are particularly effective for this purpose. Simply overlay the gradient on top of the image and adjust the transparency until you achieve the desired effect. How to Create a Gradient Background
It is easy to use gradients as a background in Canva but the process is a little different depending on if you are using a PC or a mobile device.
Creating a Gradient on a PC
- Click “Create a Design” in Canva.
- Scroll down all the design options and click the one you want to apply a gradient to.
- Choose “Uploads” on the left side of the editor control panel.
- Click “Upload Media” and upload the image you want to design with a gradient.
- After uploading, click “Elements” above Uploads.
- Type “gradient” into the search bar and hit the Enter key on your keyboard.
- Navigate through Canva’s gradient options and click the one you want to apply.
- With the gradient applied, drag its corners so it fills the relevant section of your image
Creating a Gradient on a Mobile
Gradients are a great way to add a touch of color and style to your designs. Here are the steps for adding a gradient background to your image in Canva:
- Tap the + button at the bottom corner of the image editor.
- Swipe until you reach the “Background” icon and tap it. If you don’t see the icon, swipe to find “More” and you should find “Background” there.
- Select a color tile, located beneath the search bar, and tap to apply.
- Swipe the editor panel back down to return to your design.
Follow these steps if you want to select a different color for your gradient background:
- Tap the “Palette” icon.
- Select the “+ Add a new color” option.
- Select your new color.
How to Create a Gradient in a Shape
To add a gradient to a shape in Canva, first open a new template. Next, navigate to the “Elements” tab and click on “Frames.” Choose the desired shape for your gradient and resize the image as needed. Upload your PNG file into the new template and drag it over the shape. With the image selected, use the round corners to adjust its size. Double-click the image and crop it to fit the shape. When you are finished, click “Done.”

Again, it’s best to do this with some gradient photos saved to your device. Start by creating a new document in Canva and selecting the “Gradient Background” template. This will give you a basic layout with a gradient fill that you can customize.
How to Add Gradient That Covers Photo
Adding a gradient is a great way to add some interest and depth to your photos. And, fortunately, it’s also pretty easy to do! The key is just to choose a gradient that doesn’t “fade into transparency.” So, if you go back to “elements” and then search “gradient” again, you’ll see a number of squares and rectangles that offer full gradient.
Once you’ve found the perfect gradient, enlarge the photo to cover the entire canvas. Then, add the gradient and size it so that it covers the entire photo. Last, go to your transparency adjuster and choose the level of transparency. And that’s it – you’ve now successfully added a gradient to your photo!
How to Add Gradient With Transparent Background
Adding a gradient to your photo can give it a nice effect, especially if the background is not that great. Luckily, with Canva Pro, you can easily remove the background of your photo with just one click. Simply upload your photo and select “Remove Background.” Then, add your fading gradient.
